Bench height affects a pianist's posture, sound, and health. There are two height types (adjustable and fixed), different base materials, and a version with music storage. Below is a step-by-step algorithm for choosing the right height and answers to common questions.
Why the right bench matters
The bench affects posture, seating height relative to the keyboard, and endurance during long practice sessions, especially for children who are just learning to play. Correct posture in turn affects sound quality, freedom of movement in the elbows and wrists, safety, and health.

Types of piano benches

- Base material is either metal or wood. A wooden base can have a laminate coating for extra protection against scratches and chips.
- Seat on a fixed bench is often padded, sturdy, and long-lasting.
- Color is most often white or black, so it's easy to match the piano and stand in any interior.
- Music storage is usually shallow, up to 5 cm. If you buy a stand with a lid, GA Music models already include a sheet music tray, so bench storage isn't essential.
Do you need an adjustable bench
An adjustable lift mechanism is most often needed by children under 8. It raises the body over the piano so the elbow angle is about 90 degrees, with the elbow level with the white keys or 1-2 cm above them. The standard key height above the floor that GA Music maintains as a manufacturer is 72-73 cm. The mechanism is especially useful when children of different ages play in the same family.
An adjustable bench can also help very tall people who find it more comfortable to sit a bit lower relative to the piano. For everyone else, it isn't essential: a height difference (say, between 165 cm and 185 cm) is compensated by how far the bench sits from the piano, since longer arms usually come with longer legs.
Why music storage helps
The storage compartment sits under the bench's hinged lid and helps keep a pianist's things organized: sheet music, a pencil, a notebook always in place instead of scattered around the room. It offers:

How to choose the right bench height
- Take a regular chair from home and a few books.
- Stack books on the chair to try different heights, the most popular ones are 45, 48, 50, and 55 cm.
- Sit on the front third or half of the seat.
- Work out where your hands will be. Key height above the floor is roughly 73 cm. If you already have a piano and stand, just place the test chair next to it. If you don't have a piano yet, ask someone to hold a book or board at that height so you can position your hands.
- Check your posture: forearms roughly parallel to the floor, elbows level with the keys or slightly above (elbow angle of 90 degrees or a bit more), feet flat on the floor, back straight. If a young pianist's feet don't reach the floor, add a footrest, it gives the arms more support.
- If the hands sit too high, add more books and raise the body.
- If the hands sit too low and the pianist leans heavily over the piano, try a lower seat position.
Home or music school, which to choose
Music schools most often use benches with a lift mechanism, because students of very different heights attend, from very young children to adults. At home, that need isn't always there.
At home, what matters most is seat softness (home practice sessions tend to run longer), how well it fits the interior, and how well it matches the piano stand.
At school, what matters most is structural strength, material durability (protected wooden legs, quality faux leather), and a reliable lift mechanism.
